With graduation just around the corner, it’s almost time to get ready to walk across that stage and walk right into the “real world”. Now, this may seem daunting to most, but, after all, it’s what you’ve been preparing for during the past 4 years. I promise you, entering the career field isn’t as scary as it may seem. Here’s a few pointers on what you should do next as a college graduate.
1. Polish up your resume.
Now that you’ve graduated, it’s time to update your resume! Organize your resume into separate fields such as experience, skills, education and anything else prominent. Make sure your resume is clean and easy to read (don’t clutter!). Stick to one page only. Add your college info such as any clubs or organizations you were a part of, skills you gained in classes and honors you may have won. Consider erasing any outdated work experiences like internships from early high school, or non-applicable jobs that don’t contribute to your career.
2. Grow your LinkedIn.
If you don’t have a LinkedIn page yet, make one! Send friend requests to your old bosses, roommates, college teammates…anyone you’d like to reconnect with. It’s a great way to let your network know you’re looking for employment.
3. Refresh your interview skills.
With job applications come (hopefully!) job interviews. Practice answering interview questions with friends or family to prepare yourself for the real deal. Make sure your wardrobe is updated with a few appropriate business attire options in case an interview pops up.
4. Organize your finances.
Now that you’re stepping into the “real world”, take the time to ensure that your finances are ready for the big leap. Sit down and create a budget that is within your means. The key is to think about the future and how you can get to where you want to be. If you’re still living at home, talk with your parents to set up a plan for becoming financially independent when you want to move out.
5. Don’t stress!
Transitioning from college life to real life is hard but you can do it! Don’t let the stress from the change bother you; make sure you schedule plenty of time to still enjoy the things you love. Reach out to friends for a girls night out or pick up an old hobby that makes you happy. Life’s too short to be stressed out!
