June can be a crucial time for college graduates: graduation, moving out, job applications and job interviews. If you’ve already prepared for finishing college, you may be on your way to some upcoming interviews.

Most job applicants prepare heavily for the interview questions and then once they shake hands with the recruiter and leave, they just wait. Here’s why that’s a huge mistake.

Doing this one thing after an interview just might be the final push to getting you hired: send a thank you note.

Here’s why. It shows respect to your potential future employer and company. It also displays gratitude for being considered. It may even keep you in their minds for a future position down the line if this one doesn’t work out.

Writing a meaningful letter only takes a few minutes of your time. When brainstorming what to say, consider mentioning these few points:

  • The position you applied for
  • Any key discussion points that popped up during the interview (i.e. previous projects you worked on, skills you hold, relevant certificates you have earned)
  • Compliment or appreciate the time took to interview you

That’s it! Short and sweet. By letting the employer know you are thankful, it shows good manners and a respect for their business that truly reflects what a good candidate you may be. While I think hand-written letters are best, an email can suffice in the interest of time.

Another note: Don’t wait to send this letter. If it’s by post, ideally it should be mailed out the same day as the interview. If you prefer writing an email, send it no later than 24 hours after the interview. Promptness is key!

Good luck!
